One Last Fun Non-Points Race

One last fun non-points race before we get back into racing at Jordan, and those final two races at Jordan will decide who will be 2nd and 3rd place in Quad Open B/C class for the Motokazie Supercross series championship. And speaking of that battle, the two racers who are in contention for those two positions were racing each other head-to-head last night!

A rather sizable crowd both pit-side and in the grandstands cheered on the racers from the onset of the non-standard “string start”. As both Ian Hastings and Kyle Lundin seemed to leave the starting line simultaneously, Kyle seemed to have more favorable traction which set him on the way to an easy holeshot in the heat race. However, near the end of lap 1, Hastings had found his way around Lundin in a corner. Lundin had another trick up his sleeve. On the next lap, Kyle sent what must have been a 65 foot double in front of the grandstands, and landed at the top of the landing, sending a chorus of gasps through the crowd. The next lap was much smoother as Kyle had it more dialed-in. While Ian kept a comfortable full section lead to win the heat, the buffet for the main event was laid from that point, and everyone knew the winner of the main event would come down to whether or not Ian would go for that jump too.

But, before we get to that main event, we flash to some footage Shelly Jackson took of Jacob Schilling waving to the crowd amidst sending that same 65 foot double in his Quad Open A class win. Hi’ya Jacob!

Hutchinson also has an “ATV Pit Bike” class, and Jacob Schilling, Noah Abraham, and Kyle Lundin all threw around some 90s on the track the best they could! Noah certainly being the most polished out of the group and most “fit” for their quad. Admittedly, watching Jacob and Kyle for a few laps had me longing to watch a group of old Shriners in those little red Corvette cars with the lawnmower engines during a summer parade. But I digress!

It’s main event time! Kyle and Ian line up at the string once again, the 30 second board drops and the string almost immediately releases. Kyle gets a good jump, while Ian stumbles at the line and kills his quad. By the time Ian gets refired, he is a good 6 quad lengths behind Kyle, however, he’s determined now, and by the time they both approach the grandstand, those quad lengths give Ian the confidence and space he needs to slam that grandstand double himself for the first time! We have ourselves a race!

By the time Kyle and Ian round the next berm, Ian takes an inside position and they are both nearly side-by-side with each other. Ian doesn’t let off the gas, and that extra half second gives him a couple quad lengths before Kyle takes a tight inside turn and makes it nearly even again. Ultimately, Ian ends up pulling ahead through the next section and stays ahead for the duration of the race. Ian Hastings takes his 4th overall win of the year, but both Kyle and Ian raced extremely well and made it a very fun race to watch!

It all comes down to next Friday, August 28th, and Saturday, September 19th (the Austin Kristiansen memorial race) to decide that second place standing for the championship series.
